Steve’s Dirty Words

Posted in Designs with tags , , , , , on July 27, 2016 by alteredlines

My latest commission is all about dirty words! 7 to be precise, but they’re probably not the ones that you’re thinking of…

Steve Bisson LMHC specializes in counselling services for substance abuse, also dealing with trauma and crisis in several settings. With his 7 dirty words, he wants to you to be able to overcome your past to attain Honest, Real Change. The 7 dirty words now hanging in his office highlight this.

I had a blast with this project, it was the perfect blend of fun, yet challenging. I love using pop culture references to say something deeper. With this mashup, we combined Steve’s love of Star Wars with his message. Steve insisted that the Kylo Ren illustration include the scar on his face. I like the symbolism of taking off the mask and dealing with your emotional scars to promote mental health. It was a pleasure to work with Steve again on a project. Stay Puft

My daughter has recently become obsessed with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Being that her birthday is coming up in a few days, she requested a Stay Puft toy. I looked everywhere to find one, but came up empty handed. Luckily I had a project that fell through, so I had the time to finish this for her birthday.

Working through mistakes

I just finished a commission, though the final product is not what was intended (above). I was experimenting with a new product to clear coat these panels. Unfortunately it made all the ink smudge and I was forced to do another layer over it. Luckily, I ended up liking this better than my original idea. (Below)

Sam I Am

I recently did some window art for the Jimmy Fund Clinic where my daughter is being treated. This was in celebration of Suesstember. I wanted to give something back as a gesture of gratitude for the amazing care that they have provided for my daughter. Everyone there is awesome!

They go out of their way to make the children feel comfortable. The resource room a has plenty of games, crafts, and activities to keep my daughter distracted from the impending doom of injections. Twice a week she endures the pain of double shots in her legs. Astonishingly she does this with a smile and a positive attitude. I watch in awe as she weathers these storms, showing me what true perseverance is all about.

The true test of a person is not how they act when everything is going well, but how they react when their world goes sideways. I can only hope to teach my daughter  half of what she has taugh me about life.

If you feel inclined, please consider donating to The Jimmy Fund. They are an amazing organization.

If you are unable to donate, feel free to share this to help spread the word. Thank you!

It’s a dark night tonight

The batman obsession runs deep with my newest client. It was a good thing that I absolutely love drawing capes and superheroes. Illustrating  the caped crusader was a perfect fit.
If you would like your own commission, feel free to contact me! I’d love to work with you!

Perspective

Posted in art, Word Pictures with tags , , , , on September 2, 2015 by alteredlines

There are times in life where you’re forced to see things from a new perspective. Some choose to bury their head in the sand and some choose to rise above it all. My daughter has chosen the ladder. She’s climbing up one rung at a time.

She’s taught me a lot about perseverance lately. It’s an action word. Its not about hanging in there and weathering the storm. It’s about fighting through it one step at a time, even when back pedaling. It’s about picking yourself up when you fall and not crying about the scraped knees along the way.  Besides, scars are cool! They tell a story of the journey we were on. It’s a keepsake if you will. It’s about Digging Deeper inside yourself to find strength. The type you never knew you had…

After meeting her favorite artist, Sara Richard at comic con, My daughter was fueled with a newfound love for gel pens. I highly recommend checking her site out. You’re welcome!

According to Maddy, her battle with cancer is like a bird being trapped in a cage. Right now she’s slowly working on unlocking it. As soon as she gets the door open, she plans on taking flight and rising above it all.

The Altered Lines tag line of Dig Deeper was originally conceived from a perspective of introspection. I’m a tinkerer and I like to see how things work. Which requires pulling off the cover to see what’s going on inside. This is what matters to me… It’s the heart of things that matters.  There ain’t no tin men in this family! We’re not hollow inside and we refuse to get rusted to the point where we can’t move.

So grab your basket Dorothy cuz we’re gonna see where this yellow road takes us. And you know we’re gonna pull back the curtain when we get there.

Continuing on with the kid related artwork theme as of late, I present to you:

Artwork in my children’s lunch boxes. Every once in a while I’ll surprise the kids with a little drawing and note from dad. Nothing like a little surprise art to brighten your day. One time my oldest even did it for me in my lunch, it was the cutest thing ever!
