Sam I Am

I recently did some window art for the Jimmy Fund Clinic where my daughter is being treated. This was in celebration of Suesstember. I wanted to give something back as a gesture of gratitude for the amazing care that they have provided for my daughter. Everyone there is awesome!

They go out of their way to make the children feel comfortable. The resource room a has plenty of games, crafts, and activities to keep my daughter distracted from the impending doom of injections. Twice a week she endures the pain of double shots in her legs. Astonishingly she does this with a smile and a positive attitude. I watch in awe as she weathers these storms, showing me what true perseverance is all about.

The true test of a person is not how they act when everything is going well, but how they react when their world goes sideways. I can only hope to teach my daughter  half of what she has taugh me about life.

Repercussion

Posted in Designs, Word Pictures with tags , , , , on September 29, 2015 by alteredlines

reaperWe all make choices in life. Good or bad they are ours to make and no one can be blamed or credited for the choices but ourselves. We must take accountability for our actions, after all is said and done, you reap what you sow.
Often times people are upset with the repercussions of a given situation. The thing to be aware of is who was responsible for the percussion In the first place. If you’re the one holding the drum stick, you are the one responsible for the beat. It’s not always easy to keep pace.

I’m unfortunately good at learning from hindsight (it’s 20/20 after all), the problem being that I need to remind myself to take a step back to see the bigger picture. I could benefit by shoving rationalization aside, rather than giving him a chance to speak and entertain his thoughts. Ahh well you reap what you sow, right? It is what it is…

The above graphic represents those type of moments. Using rationalization to convince yourself that the decision you’re about to make is as pure as a freshly picked daisy. Meanwhile you neglect to dig deeper and get to the roots of the issue. Further down the road you realize that you my have inadvertently put a noose around your neck. Choices…

It’s a dark night tonight

The batman obsession runs deep with my newest client. It was a good thing that I absolutely love drawing capes and superheroes. Illustrating  the caped crusader was a perfect fit.

Perspective

Posted in art, Word Pictures with tags , , , , on September 2, 2015 by alteredlines

There are times in life where you’re forced to see things from a new perspective. Some choose to bury their head in the sand and some choose to rise above it all. My daughter has chosen the ladder. She’s climbing up one rung at a time.

She’s taught me a lot about perseverance lately. It’s an action word. Its not about hanging in there and weathering the storm. It’s about fighting through it one step at a time, even when back pedaling. It’s about picking yourself up when you fall and not crying about the scraped knees along the way.  Besides, scars are cool! They tell a story of the journey we were on. It’s a keepsake if you will. It’s about Digging Deeper inside yourself to find strength. The type you never knew you had…

After meeting her favorite artist, Sara Richard at comic con, My daughter was fueled with a newfound love for gel pens. I highly recommend checking her site out. You’re welcome!

According to Maddy, her battle with cancer is like a bird being trapped in a cage. Right now she’s slowly working on unlocking it. As soon as she gets the door open, she plans on taking flight and rising above it all.

The Altered Lines tag line of Dig Deeper was originally conceived from a perspective of introspection. I’m a tinkerer and I like to see how things work. Which requires pulling off the cover to see what’s going on inside. This is what matters to me… It’s the heart of things that matters.  There ain’t no tin men in this family! We’re not hollow inside and we refuse to get rusted to the point where we can’t move.

So grab your basket Dorothy cuz we’re gonna see where this yellow road takes us. And you know we’re gonna pull back the curtain when we get there.

Do I have a God Complex?

Posted in art, fashion with tags , , , , , on August 2, 2015 by alteredlines

Or is it just my electrifying personality? Or is it just that I love cheesy humor? Even before I had kids, I was told I had “Dad humor”. Do what you’re good at right?

I’m taking the girls to The Boston Comic Con this weekend. The above picture is my first ever attempt at cosplay. My sewing skills are remedial at best, so I decided to employ lots of glue for this project. Being that my daughters are going as Black Widow and Captain America, they decided that I should be Thor. I don’t exactly have a Norse god physique so I’ll be representing what the retired Thor would look like.

I went with a mix of Classic Thor and Thor Odinson. This design is also dedicated to my oldest daughter’s battle with leukemia. If you’d like, you can read more about this by clicking here. The idea behind dressing up is to let my daughter know that she is a hero, she is strong and she will get through this ordeal. Coming through this, there will be nothing in life that can stop her.

The belt buckle design is the logo for Team Maddy. The T is a cross and the M a heart, depicting faith and love. The bird represents her passion for all the winged beasts. One day she will walk and not grow weary, run and not grow faint and she will soar on wings like eagles.

The various scrapes and cuts in the armor represent the trials and tribulations that she has faced on her journey. Since I love my girls there is a heart on the helmet. On the hammer is an inscription of the purpose of Team Maddy.

Don’t Worry!

harpy

I’ve been avoiding writing this post for a some time now. I usually have to wipe a few tears when I even think about what to say here.

My oldest daughter was recently diagnosed with cancer…
Yeah, I know that’s a heavy word. The weight of it was almost unbearable when I first heard it. How could my baby have cancer? My world came crashing down.
She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The family was reeling, It was a devastating blow. My next move was crucial. I decided to throw a party. You know the type, we’ve all been to one. The pity party was in full swing. The special of the night was “Woe is me Pale Ale”.
A few drinks in and I realized that this was a bad idea, hindsight is always like that. It was time to shut the party down. Last call! Everybody out! Fear and doubt were the first ones to go, I had the bouncers take care of them. Worry lingered, but I finally gathered the courage to ask them to leave. The thing with worries is that they cloud your mind with things that haven’t happened yet. And there’s a good chance that they never will happen. I’d rather laugh than cry, I’d also prefer to be happy over worrying. Especially in stressful situations. I made the picture above to remind my daughter of this. With her love of birds and our mutual love of word play, we came up with “Don’t worry, be harpy.” The harpy eagle happens to be her favorite bird at the moment. We also hid our initials, M and d, in the text.
My daughter is responding really well to her treatment. The people at The Children’s Hospital and the Jimmy Fund are incredible. Seriously they are amazing! We’re so lucky to have them nearby. Madison was already an amazing little girl, but now she’s my hero. Her display of grace, courage, and a positive attitude are something to strive for. That little girl rocks!
If you feel inclined to do so, please consider donating to The Children’s Hospital and/or the Jimmy Fund.

Shad – He say she say

shad

I was in the car with the girls the other day listening Taylor Swift. I couldn’t take another round of speak now. (the girls will listen to that song like 20 times in a row if I let them) That song haunts my dreams! To get some reprieve I popped in  Shad’s Flying Colours. This graphic is inspired by a line from the song “He say she say”. If you’re into hip hop, I highly recommend!

I also did another one a while back for the song “Yaa I get it” Click here to check it out.
