Words Make Worlds

We often are so focused on ourselves that we tend to neglect those around us. Never realizing the power of our words and often never taking ownership of our actions. It’s amazing how the littlest things can effect our day. I’ve heard it said that we tend to blow out others candles to make ours grow brighter.

When I worked in a corporate office, Fridays were casual with a company gathering at the end of the day. One of my co-workers had on these bright red Nikes. You could tell they were a recent acquisition as he walked a little taller, his chest puffed out a with the new gear glow.

All the guys joined together and started harassing him. Cat calls like “Hey Dorothy, click your heals! There’s no place like home!” darted through the air. He kept his game face on as most guys do in this situation, throwing back as many verbal projectiles as he could. But as he walked out, you could see that he was a little deflated. Feet dragging, as the spring in his step was gone and the glow had faded…

It’s a shame; I never saw those shoes again. I should have told him that I liked them. Maybe a kind word could have helped?
